Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

So what *is* Greymatter, really?

Greymatter is a program for use in creating and maintaining a weblog, journal, news/updates page, or other similar type of site. Unlike most other services, Greymatter is a downloadable program that runs entirely on your own server and depends on no outside service whatsoever.

Who is Greymatter meant for?

Greymatter is primarily meant for "power users"—those who consider themselves fairly experienced with the web and the creation/maintenance of such sites as described above—though many web novices also enjoy Greymatter as well. Greymatter's main focus is on customisation and control—many people new to weblogs/journals may find services such as Blogger much better geared to their needs, whereas "control freaks" (such as yours truly) who just can't have enough tweaking and customisation abilities at their disposal will probably find Greymatter more ideal for them.

Is Greymatter hard to use? (or: WHY is Greymatter so @*&!ing hard to use?)

Well, however easy or hard Greymatter is to use depends on your point of view and what you want or expect out of a weblog/journal program. Greymatter *does* certainly take time to install (the price of running independently on your server is the hassle involved in getting it working on your server), and because it offers a vastly wider range of customisation options than most similar services, it also typically takes more time to get everything customised and to become familiar with what's what—but I hope that those who *want* all those options will appreciate the fact that they're there.

Will you add this feature or that feature for me, please?

With the release of Greymatter 1.2, I've decided to indefinitely stop working on and offering personal support for Greymatter; barring any possible bug-fix releases, right now I simply don't know when or if there will be another version of Greymatter. (Of course, that doesn't mean Greymatter itself is coming to an end; since Greymatter runs entirely on your own server, it can be downloaded and used by anyone from now 'til doomsday, regardless of its creator.)

Is Greymatter free? Are there any strings attached? Do I have to donate to you?

Yes, no, and no. =) Greymatter is absolutely one-thousand-percent a free program; download it, use it, enjoy it, and don't worry about any ifs, ands, or buts—because there aren't any. There aren't any icons you're required to keep on your page, there aren't any banner ads you're required to display, there's no time limit that's going to kick in down the road. (If there ever is a Greymatter 2.0/Greymatter Pro version in the future, I *might* charge a fee for that, but all 1.x versions are now and always will be completely free.) Donating will certainly make me very happy, but that's not required either.

This is just a quick-and-dirty FAQ—more ?'s and !'s will be added one of these days.
